Blood donors save lives
Robin West, MD, the Chairman of Inova Sports Medicine and Lead Physician for the @nationals, underwent a life-altering experience following a traumatic bicycle accident. In addition to the first responders, emergency officers, and trauma surgeons who helped Dr. West recover from her life-threatening injuries, blood donors have played a very critical role in keeping her alive. She received seven units of blood and 11 units of plasma, which is two times the volume of her body.
Dr. West has been a longtime blood donor. "But, then it came to my turn [to be the recipient]. The anesthesiologist said to me – ‘We’re going to give you as much blood as we can to keep you alive,’” she said.
This #GivingTuesday, join us in celebrating Dr. West’s incredible journey by donating blood. Your generous gift could be a lifeline for someone else, contributing to the ongoing cycle of hope and healing. Together, let's make a difference!

From surgeon to patient: Loss of certainty is real

It was a Friday – April 14, to be exact, and I’d left the operating room earlier than expected. It was beautiful outside, the perfect day for a walk, run or ride.

ESPN 2016 IMPACT25
I met Dr. West when she was at the Pittsburgh Steelers. She was a doctor on staff while I was a player. I was always most comfortable talking with Dr. West because it felt like one of the few judgment-free zones within the NFL medical staffs.

Football Girl
One night at the NFL combine this past February I happened upon a restaurant with a large table of orthopedic surgeons in town repping their teams and assigning medical grades to incoming prospects. Among the group, one diner stood out in particular. She was blond, pretty, perky and well, a she. She was Pittsburgh Steelers orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Robin West.
